What Is Phone Camera Control?
Phone Camera Control is a free plugin for Adobe After Effects that connects your phone to your AE composition over Wi-Fi. It does two things:
1. Live Preview on Your Phone
See your After Effects composition streamed to your phone screen in real time. Walk around the room, show your client, check framing on a mobile device — all without rendering.
2. Physical Camera Control
Move your phone and the 3D camera in After Effects moves with it. Pan, tilt, orbit — your phone's motion sensors (gyroscope + accelerometer) translate directly into camera animation. Hold the record button and physically walk through your 3D scene to capture natural, organic camera moves that are nearly impossible to create with a mouse.
The plugin installs into After Effects as a native panel (Window > Phone Camera Control). The companion app runs on your phone. They find each other automatically over your local Wi-Fi network — no IP addresses to type, no configuration needed.
How It Works
Step 1 — Install the Plugin
Download and install the Phone Camera Control plugin on your Mac or Windows PC. It takes 30 seconds. After installation, restart After Effects and open the panel from Window > Phone Camera Control.
Step 2 — Install the App
Download Phone Camera Control from Google Play (or the App Store when available for iOS). Open the app and sign up — it takes a few seconds and you'll receive 30 free Ad Credits to start with.
Step 3 — Connect
Make sure your phone and computer are on the same Wi-Fi network. Open the Phone Camera Control panel in After Effects, then open the app on your phone. Your phone will automatically discover After Effects within seconds — no setup required. Your phone name will appear in the "Ready Phones" list inside After Effects.
Step 4 — Stream & Control
Your active After Effects composition begins streaming to your phone instantly. Tap the gyroscope icon to activate camera control — now your phone's physical movement drives the 3D camera in After Effects in real time. Adjust zoom, focus distance, depth of field, and aperture directly from your phone's controls.
Step 5 — Record
When you find a camera move you like, tap the record button. Single-tap places a keyframe at the current time. Press and hold to record continuously — the plugin captures a keyframe every frame as you move your phone, creating smooth, natural camera animation. Release to stop recording.

Single-tap the shutter to place a keyframe at the current time indicator. Press and hold for continuous recording — the plugin advances frame by frame, capturing your motion as permanent keyframes. Release to stop.
Camera Settings from Your Phone
Control zoom (focal length), focus distance, aperture, blur level, and depth of field toggle directly from your phone. Changes are applied to the AE camera in real time.
Multi-Phone Support
Connect multiple phones simultaneously. Each phone gets its own camera layer in After Effects and sees the composition from its own camera's perspective. Perfect for scouting multiple angles at once or collaborating with a team.
Timeline Control
Play, pause, scrub, step forward/back, and jump to start/end of your composition — all from your phone. No need to reach for the keyboard during a recording session.
Camera Picker
Choose which existing AE camera layer your phone controls, or let the plugin create a new one automatically. Switch between cameras without touching After Effects.

Installation — Mac
1. Download the .pkg installer above
2. Double-click the downloaded file to open the installer
3. Follow the on-screen steps: Introduction > License > Install
4. Enter your Mac password when prompted
5. Open (or restart) After Effects
6. Go to **Window > Phone Camera Control** — the panel will appear
The plugin installs to the system-wide Adobe MediaCore folder, so it works with any version of After Effects on your Mac.
Installation — Windows
1. Download the .exe installer above
2. Run the installer (you may need to click "Yes" on the UAC prompt)
3. Follow the setup wizard: Welcome > License > Install
4. Open (or restart) After Effects
5. Go to **Window > Phone Camera Control** — the panel will appear
The plugin installs to `C:\Program Files\Adobe\Common\Plug-ins\7.0\MediaCore\`, so it works with any version of After Effects on your PC.
Uninstalling
Mac: Open Finder, go to `/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Common/Plug-ins/7.0/MediaCore/` and delete `PhoneCameraControlStream.plugin`. Restart After Effects.
Windows: Use "Add or Remove Programs" in Windows Settings, find "Phone Camera Control for After Effects", and click Uninstall. Or manually delete `PhoneCameraControlStream.aex` from `C:\Program Files\Adobe\Common\Plug-ins\7.0\MediaCore\`.
Ad Credits — How Recording Works
Phone Camera Control is free to use with all features included. There is no "lite" or "pro" version — every user gets the full experience: live streaming, camera control, multi-phone support, camera settings, timeline control, and recording.
What Are Ad Credits?
Ad Credits are your recording currency. When you record camera keyframes (single-tap or continuous recording), you spend Ad Credits. Each Ad Credit gives you recording time.
Free Credits on Sign-Up
When you create your account in the app, you receive **30 free Ad Credits** — enough to get started and capture your first camera moves right away.
Earning More Ad Credits
When your Ad Credits run out, you can watch a short video ad to earn **10 seconds** of additional recording time. Watch as many ads as you want — there's no daily cap. This way, the app stays completely free for everyone who's willing to watch a quick ad between recording takes.
Everything Else Is Unlimited
Streaming your composition to your phone, moving the camera in real time, adjusting camera settings, controlling the timeline, connecting multiple phones — all of this is completely free and unlimited, with no ads. Ad Credits only apply to recording keyframes.

Getting Started
Requirements
- Adobe After Effects 2024 or later (Mac or Windows)
- A phone with the Phone Camera Control app (Android now, iOS coming soon)
- Both devices on the same Wi-Fi network (5 GHz band recommended for best performance)
Your First Session
1. Create a composition in After Effects with some 3D layers — a simple 3D text or shape layer is enough to start with.
2. Open the panel — go to Window > Phone Camera Control. You'll see the "Ready Phones" list (empty at first) and download links for the app.
3. Open the app on your phone. If this is your first time, sign up for an account. Your phone will scan for After Effects on your network.
4. Your phone appears in the Ready Phones list inside AE. Within seconds, your composition starts streaming to your phone screen.
5. Activate camera control — tap the gyroscope button in the app. Hold your phone steady and move it slowly. You'll see the AE camera follow your movement in real time.
6. Calibrate — if the camera orientation feels off, tap the calibrate button to reset. The current phone position becomes the new "neutral" position.
7. Record a move — position the CTI (current time indicator) where you want the animation to start. Tap record for a single keyframe, or press and hold for continuous recording. Move your phone during the hold — each frame captures your position and rotation as keyframes.
Tips for Best Results
Network Performance
- Use a 5 GHz Wi-Fi network for the fastest, most reliable streaming
- 2.4 GHz works but may introduce more latency
- Keep both devices on the same network — the plugin uses local network discovery
Smooth Recording
- Hold your phone with both hands for steadier movement
- Start slow — fast movements can create jerky keyframes
- Use the timeline controls on your phone to review your take immediately
- If a take isn't right, undo in After Effects (Cmd/Ctrl+Z) and try again
Camera Settings
- Adjust zoom (focal length) on your phone to frame your shot before recording
- Enable Depth of Field for cinematic focus pulls
- Aperture and focus distance can be animated during recording too
Multi-Phone Workflow
- Connect a second phone to get a second camera angle simultaneously
- Each phone auto-creates its own camera layer in AE (named after the phone)
- Use the camera picker in the app to bind a phone to an existing camera layer instead
- The AE viewer automatically splits to show each phone's perspective

The stream is a preview — it doesn't need to be 60 fps. Even at 5 fps, camera control feels responsive because your phone's motion sensors update at full speed and the plugin applies the camera transform independently of the stream frame rate.

Is the plugin really free?
Yes. The After Effects plugin is 100% free — no trial period, no license key, no subscription, no feature limits. Download it, install it, use it forever.
Is the app free?
Yes. The app is free to download and includes all features. You start with 30 free Ad Credits for recording. When they run out, watch a short ad to earn more. Or upgrade to Ad-Free for unlimited recording with a one-time purchase.
Do I need an internet connection?
You need Wi-Fi to connect your phone to your computer, but it's a local connection — no internet required. Your composition data never leaves your network. However, the phone app needs an internet connection for sign-up and for loading rewarded ads (if using the free version).
Does it work with any composition?
Yes. The plugin streams whatever is in your active composition — 2D layers, 3D layers, effects, precomps, everything. The camera control only affects 3D camera layers, but the streaming works with any content.
Can I use it with a 2D composition?
The streaming works with 2D compositions, so you can use your phone as a wireless preview monitor. However, camera control requires a 3D camera in the composition — the plugin will create one automatically when a phone starts sending motion data.
Does it work over cellular / remote networks?
No. Both devices must be on the same local Wi-Fi network. The plugin uses Bonjour/mDNS for discovery and direct TCP/UDP for streaming, which only work on local networks.
What phones are supported?
Any Android phone with Android 8.0 or later. iOS support is coming soon. The phone needs a gyroscope and accelerometer (virtually all modern smartphones have these).
Can multiple people control cameras at the same time?
Yes. Connect multiple phones and each one gets its own camera layer. Each phone independently controls its own camera — great for multi-angle setups or team scouting sessions.
Will it slow down After Effects?
The plugin renders at a reduced resolution (quarter by default) and only when the panel is open and a phone is connected. When no phones are connected, the plugin is completely dormant. You'll see minimal impact on complex compositions, though very heavy comps may reduce the stream frame rate.
What data does the app collect?
The app requires an account for Ad Credit tracking. Your composition content is streamed locally over your Wi-Fi — it is never uploaded to any server.

Common Issues
Phone can't find After Effects
- Make sure both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network
- Check that the Phone Camera Control panel is open in AE (Window > Phone Camera Control)
- Try disabling your firewall temporarily, or allow After Effects through your firewall
- On Windows: make sure Bonjour Service is running (comes with iTunes or Apple Devices)
Stream is very slow or choppy
- Switch to a 5 GHz Wi-Fi network
- Reduce your composition resolution in AE (Half or Quarter)
- Close other network-heavy applications
- Keep your phone and computer on the same access point (not mesh network roaming)
Camera movement is jittery
- Calibrate by tapping the calibrate button in the app
- Hold the phone steadily with both hands
- Avoid very fast movements — the motion sensors have physical limits
Plugin doesn't appear in After Effects
- Make sure After Effects was restarted after installation
- Check that the plugin file exists:
